What a strange name for a fish food manufacturer. Well you are not only correct we think you are exactly on the mark. That is why we named our fish food Cichlid Plus+ rather than calling it Grass Roots Nursery.
Initially our "nursery" started out and still is a working nursery that carries trees, shrubs, and perennials. It has since come over some pretty real dramatic changes. 25 years ago we became Michigan's Largest water garden retail water garden supplier and we went on our quest for a fish food that was great for koi. We learned that Koi have a short gut, not much as far as a digestion tract. Which in short means that whatever they eat had better be good for them or they will not be healthy, and their will be a lot of waste. We actually had to come up with our own blend to get something that we felt was good enough to feed to our fish and sell at our store. It had to be affordable. If people are going to take good care of their pets they have to be able to afford to do just that. We have gained experience in fish keeping and their nutrition through years of modification in the diet formulation, scientific consultations, and at times utter frustration.
As a child our family had a 15 gal fish tank, it was a mess. If the males weren't beating the females to death the flake food fouled the water. We now keep over 30,000 gallons of fresh water, marine, and pond all loaded with fish and other critters. Looking back to 30 years ago animal husbandry hasn't changed a bit. The fish still want good quality food, and good water quality. What has changed is that now we have choices, more than ever before. High quality feeds are hard to find and if located are sometimes harder to afford. If you are tired of paying a high dollar for imported feeds but still demand a nutritious diet for your fish you are in the right place.
We have had 4 different mills manufacture our feed for us before we found one that would suit us. We are picky and we pay for it.
We pull the ingredients together, they put it together, we package it, the fish eat it, and they grow. We go to great lengths to manufacture our feeds and strive to achieve new goals.
Yes we are still a nursery, a plant nursery, a fish nursery, and a coral nursery, maybe we should have named ourselves Grass Roots Farm. But we do not sell sod.
